Central Maui is the hub of commerce and government on the island, home to the largest airport (Kahului Airport) and the island’s main harbor. The region is a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas, with several communities that each have their own unique character.
 

Kahului

Kahului is the commercial and economic center of Maui. It has large shopping centers, major businesses, and government offices. The area is home to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and Queen Kaʻahumanu Center, the island’s largest mall. While not typically a tourist destination, Kahului is where most visitors first arrive on the island.
 

Wailuku

Just west of Kahului, Wailuku is Maui’s historic capital and the county seat. It has a charming downtown with small shops, restaurants, and historic buildings. The residential neighborhoods in Wailuku range from older plantation-style homes to modern subdivisions. The area offers easy access to ʻIao Valley State Park, known for its lush landscapes and cultural significance.
 

Waikapū

A smaller, more rural community, Waikapū is known for its scenic beauty and agricultural lands. It is home to the Maui Tropical Plantation and is experiencing some residential development, including the growing Waikapū Country Town project.
 

Maʻalaea

Located along the southern coastline of Central Maui, Maʻalaea is a small harbor village known for its boat harbor, which is a departure point for whale-watching and snorkeling tours. The Maui Ocean Center, one of the island’s top attractions, is also in Maʻalaea. The area has a mix of condos and vacation rentals.
